Middle Age

In my new book “Holiday” Lyn wakes on her 50th birthday with middle age staring her right in the face. Her belly sags, she’s taken to wearing passion killer rubber knickers and she’s waiting for the menopause to arrive with yet more weight around the middle. Sound familiar? ‘Holiday’ is about a family trip to America but middle age themes reverberate across every storyline in this travel novel and if you are in the age bracket 40 to 60 you will find yourself nodding and smiling in sympathy and cringing as you empathise with Lyn’s plight. Jenny Eclair the comedian talking about middle age on her recent tour gave a hideous description about the labia descending in middle age. Well that’s just plain exaggeration but we get her point! The body does change and not for the better.

But do things need to be this way? We could reverse the trend to pile on the weight in the middle years by taking action before it’s too late. Surely we all want to live longer and in better health. The midlife crisis is in the news today as people prepare to begin their new year’s resolutions – that nasty chore that happens once a year but doesn’t last beyond a few weeks. Public Health England warn of a health crisis because of unhealthy lifestyles. That’s why Lyn in “Holiday” is determined to change her sad trajectory. 8 in every 10 people in England are apparently overweight, drink too much or get too little exercise the government body warns. So why not turn over a new leaf in 2017 and make a pledge to get fit. Join your local gym, meet new people, be inspired by the example of others. If you live in Haywards Heath, in Sussex Fit For Moore is a personal trainer offering keep fit classes and weight loss classes. See the link here: http://www.fitformoore.co.uk

There are plenty of reasonably priced gyms and classes across the country or you could just aim to get the heart beat raised once a day with a fast walk of 20 minutes, a 5 minute jump on a trampoline, or do 10 minutes of steps on the bottom step of your stairs. It might even extend your life, fight diabetes and make you feel better about yourself.

Maybe the source of your weight is too much drink. You could be what they call a high functioning alcoholic? You cope well at work and home and don’t see that you have a drink issue but you are in fact storing up problems for the future. If you want to learn more about High Functioning Alcoholism this short book is helpful: https://www.amazon.co.uk/High-Functioning-Alcoholism-Sober-Gray-Nomad-ebook/dp/B01N95RT4E/

It’s great to have an aim. Losing a few pounds for that holiday you’ve booked can be an incentive and if you haven’t booked a holiday my book “Holiday” might inspire you to visit Yellowstone National Park where you’ll do plenty of walking and view some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.
